Before departing for Cairo, we stopped in the town of Bawidi to pick up some food for the long Saharan road back. Here, interestingly, by the man from whom I purchased fruit in less than kilogram-driven quantities (and for which I received looks of concern from my travel companions), I was asked for my number. A for effort, as far as I’m concerned, even though he didn’t get it.
This little town runs on old traditions; women very rarely leave the home. If they need something, the men are their runners. As soon as the girls become engaged, they switch from hijab to niqab. While not our norm, there are many foreign women who have married men of this town, and who continue to live here quite comfortably, it seems.
I have dipped in and out of a deflated heart for the past 24 hours, so I will leave you tonight with little text, and a follow-up post with 10 additional photos from yesterday’s adventures at the Black, and Crystal deserts. (White Desert images will follow in the next couple of days.) The photos reference is specifically for those following on instagram, rather than solely at this site.
Today, I am grateful for:
1. The smell of soap.
2. The flavour of local fruits and vegetables.
3. Hot showers.
