May this month bring its blessings; may our fast be accepted and our prayers heard, Inshallah.
Aside from merely undertaking the physical act of fasting this year, try cutting something else out – something as (simple) as refusing to take part in gossip / back biting. It is, in Islam, one of the majour sins; let’s avoid it for this month alone if we can’t for the other 11. We will be better people for it…
Remember:
O you who have attained to faith! No men shall deride (other) men: it may be that those (whom they deride) are better than themselves; and no woman (shall deride other) women: it may be that those (whom they deride) are better than themselves. And neither shall you defame one another, nor insult one another by (opprobrious) epithets: evil is all imputation of iniquity after (one has attained to) faith (…)
O you who have attained to faith! Avoid most guesswork (about one another and which may lead to unfounded suspicion of another person’s motives) – for, behold, some of (such) guesswork is (in itself) a sin; and do not spy upon one another, and neither allow yourselves to speak ill of one another behind your backs. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Nay, you would loathe it! (49: parts of 11 & 12)
Anyone interested in joining me, Muslim or not?

Maha.. I decided that this Ramadan, I will do it right.. When I do break the fast at sunset, there will be no stuffing of my face.. Today, I broke my fast on a full glass of water and one date, I then prayed first and this time allowed my stomach to feel full with the water. I then had a big salad with a few chicken pieces.. and I am VERY OK.. I did not bonk on the couch as I do when I shock my stomach with food.. i did not even need a coffee as I was easing up on caffeine a few days earlier.. The beauty of ramadan is that it makes it much easier to be disciplined when you decide to do so for a bigger reason as compared with going on a diet for example.
There was a Muslim player with the vancouver canucks (Sherif Abdel Raheem) who wanted to fast during the season. the coach freaked out but when it was done on a trial basis, they found he was so motivated, he played better fasting.. I guess it is all in our head.. as the martial arts people would tell you .. it is all in your head 🙂

I’m in, but not sure how much a sacrifice it will be, since–not to be immodest–I’m not a gossiper in any case. Will try to think of something else, though, since I slacked off at Lent.
Thank you, Maha, for inviting us to share the experience. xox

Ramadan blessings, Maha.
I will think of something else to cut from my life this month as support – I think beer would be good.

Now remember to behave for a month, Maha. 🙂 Have a good Ramadan and don’t eat too much afterwards.
p.s. I’m familiar with Tarzan Boy by Baltimora
